"Let’s give them something to talk about": Communication Through the Ages

The Dalhousie Graduate History Society invites graduate students from all branches of the Humanities and Social Sciences to submit proposals for our 14th annual ‘History Across the Disciplines’ Conference, to take place at Dalhousie University Halifax, Nova Scotia, March 18-20, 2011.

The theme of this year's conference is “Let’s give them something to talk about”: Communication Through the Ages”. Especially relevant to this theme are issues concerning performance and propaganda, scholarship and pop culture, gossip and journalism, material culture and narrative within the realm of oral, visual and written methods of communication.

There are no temporal or geographical limitations to this theme, and all proposals will be considered. Interested applicants should submit a 250-400 word abstract by January 15th 2011 to dalconference2011@gmail.com. Append to the abstract your area of study, degree level and year, along with contact information. Presentations are between 10 to 15 minutes each, so papers should be no more than 15 pages in length. In order to be considered for the John Flint Prize for best paper/presentation, including a $250 honorarium, finished papers must be received by February 5th 2011.

In addition to panels, there will be a keynote address by Dr. Kirrily Freeman, author of BRONZES TO BULLETS: VICHY AND THE DESTRUCTION OF FRENCH PUBLIC STATUARY, 1941-1944, on the evening of March 18th, followed by a reception. On Saturday night, presenters are invited to experience local Halifax culture with us in the informal setting of a maritime pub.
